“He’s been doing well.” He carried on the conversation calmly. “He wanted to come and see you, but he needs to stay in Suwa and uphold the barrier. It gets stronger every day.”
“So I’ve heard. He’s certainly making waves from what I hear. The fact that you’ve gone nine months without problems certainly raises the hope of the lords and people everywhere.” She grit her teeth and let out a pained grunt.
“Chiyo?” Matsu looked at her with a worried face.
The midwife moved and lifted up the blanket covering Chiyo’s lower half. “It’s starting. Get the herbs ready.” She looked at Kurogane and Matsu. “And the both of you, you may be high ranking men but when it comes to birthing you are MY servants and you are to follow MY commands. If you do that, we’ll be able to take good care of the mother and child. Clear?”
“Yes, of course.” Kurogane replied immediately and nodded. He certainly wasn’t going to take charge in a situation like this. He had never been around an actual birth before.
“Oh gods it hurts!” Chiyo cried out as the assistance fed her medicine and cool water to help with the pain.
“I need you to start pushing Chiyo. On the count of three give one big push. One…two…three!”
The lady pushed as hard as she could, holding tight to Matsu and Kurogane’s hand before falling back and relaxing.
“Good Chiyo. Take a breather, we’ll have you push again soon.”
